Taxis are still the quickest, and you are (or should be) in control.
Give 'em your destination, tell them NO TUNNEL, and you should be fine.
Many folks are intimidated by what the driver might say in re. to their
choice...stick to you guns, and know your best route options. Most drivers
are good and some are even lots of fun...
You can always get advice here before a trip in re. to best route and
average price from other folks...don't be affraid NOT TO PAY if you
KNOW you've been long hauled! Asking for a recipt and jotting down
their cab number and name is alway good insurance if you think you
have a problem. Drivers are not allowed to long haul you and can loose
their license if you turn them in. Get your recipt and info, tell them you
will check with the Taxi Cab Athority and confirm your ride was a correct
one. Twice it's happened to me, and twice I called them on it and paid only
what I knew was the correct fare.
ALSO...make sure they re-set the meter. If they try and give you some line like...."OK if we just start the meter from here?", ask them to please
re-set their meter. A meter should start at $3.20
