I believe the Hormel plant (and SPAM museum) is in Austin MN. in that area, anyway.
I didn't grow up eating the stuff but my wife did. Fried, or ground up with onions and cheese. I've had that, not horrible, but once a year is plenty. For an office party we made the United states of Spam. Cheated a bit on the east coast by grouping some states.
