Default Reggie Jackson to bring baseball to Vegas?

Straw that stirs the drink. Hall of Fame slugger Reggie has assembled a deep-pocketed and politically connected team to bring baseball here. Among them: Brian Greenspun, editor of the" Las Vegas Sun"; developer Marty Burger; investor Stephen Ross; and the McCaw brothers, the cellular phone pioneers who control a multi-billion fortune.

"If any major sport moves there, it will be a financial success," predicts Jackson., who spends about half the year in Las Vegas and plans to make it his "main base" in the future.

Gavin Maloof , co-owner of Maloof Entertainment, says his family would also "look" closely at any ownership bid by Jackson: "This is all Reggie talks about. He's a man possessed."

This is about the Florida Marlins, who are looking to relocate due to a failed new stadium in Miami.

Other tidbit from the article..

At the top of the list is Las Vegas along with: Portland, Ore.; northern Virginia; northern New Jersey; and Monterrey, Mexico. "There are a lot places that want us. They're lining up," says Samson.

Hmm. Couple things:
- Every baseball team that wants a new stadium is "seriously considering" moving to ... (pick a place).
- It would be quite a leap for a major pro sports league to put a team in Nevada. They all like to at least look like they're above gambling.
- The best/most serious ownership "groups" aren't groups, they're individuals with boatloads of cash.

I think Las Vegas could do a better job using the minor league hockey and baseball teams it currently has as tourist attractions, but I rather doubt a pro franchise is moving in.

Good points.

The next couple months it will get interesting, especially when the dust clears and there will be 2-3 cities bidding hard for the team.

Goodman is such a goofball anyway...I doubt Vegas will ever land
any new Sports teams...even from future mayors.

To me, one of the biggest reasons it won't happen is GAMING won't
make LOTS OF MONEY on it.
All those folks sitting outside in the 116o heat for hours (lots of fun!)
instead of inside their casinos spending money doesn't seem like a
great idea to them I bet...

www.vegastodayandtomorrow.com (click HOTELS)
has a really cool Sports complex...'CITY OF SPORTS' but even still,
I don't think Las Vegas is made for the home of a big Sports team.
