Now that the Stardust is on the chopping block (our favorite place to stay), where would be a good place to stay on the north end, or anywhere else that would be comparably priced?
Stardust was a great value with an excellent staff in our opinion. We'd like to find something similar. Interested in the board's thoughts... |

Well, I can't argue...the GOLD COAST always has reasonable prices,
a couple good restaurants and buffet, rooms do the trick, but nothing special and there aren't any suites. RIO and PLAMS are right there, but it's finding that STARDUST 'touch'...that ambience, along with the good deals we're talkin' about...right? There's really not much choice...folks WILL have to find a new home and the GOLD COAST is a great possibility. It's friendly, clean and comfy, good gaming...BUT IT'S ALSO OFF THE STRIP. Just about any NEW choice will be off the Strip or else completely downtown. It's fun to explore new hotel/casinos but it's a pain in the ass to have to go shopping again and....all the older properties are going to go the same way as THE DUST, it's just a matter of time. Find a new home base that will be around for a while and enjoy the new adventures if you don't find 'the right place' right off the bat. To really make an about face, the new SOUTHCOAST looks pretty good. You'll learn to enjoy a whole new section of town...GVR, the DISTRICT is all down that way (give or take 6 miles) and it's gonna keep growing...... |

We were also thinking about Riviera and Sahara. More so Sahara, since it has the monorail. Although both of those properties' life expectancy is questionable at best.
I cruised the Orleans while we were there in Dec and liked the feel of the place. The room prices are reasonable as are the restaurants. Again, it's off strip but it does have the shuttle to BC, although I've heard it is sometimes so crowded you can't get a seat. I'm hoping our host at Stardust lands somewhere nice on the strip and invites us to stay there. Regardless we will stay at Stardust at least one more time before it closes (to celebrate paying off our house sometime later this year!) Thanks for all the feedback. |

We are going to the Gold Coast for our third time in March. The hotel is small as well as the casino and I feel very comfortable there. They have a nice lounge with some pretty good bands playing there. They have a sports book poker room some decent restaurants and a small fitness center. They shuttle to Barbary Coast can get crowded but it runs every 15 to 20 min so no biggie for us if we have to wait. I give it two thumbs up. No Wynn or Belagio but a nice place to call home. at a resonable price.

I called the Southcast...not because i have a dollar to my name, but was just curious.
They told me the shuttle between BC ---> Southcoast Southcoast --> BC is for hotel guests only WITH A ROOM key. |

In answer to the original question, I would not hesitate to recommend the Riviera for an alternate north strip hotel. We have stayed there several times for conferences, and it's fine.
If you do decide to stay off strip, I really like the Orleans. The rooms are really nice, the beds very comfortable, the pool is great. Good restaurants and we used the shuttle to Barbary Coast every day and never found it full. You can also shuttle over to Gold Coast to play there or walk to Rio. Chris |
