Default I want to meet the HYPE members

First off -- fair warning -- what i'm about to say is very "iffy" and in early stages of consideration.

Part I - i'd like to meet the casino hype gang. That's why i did the post regarding travel dates & what not. It would be nice if all of you were going the end of March. I wish Grant had a calendar that u could post when someone is GOING!?!?! I'm not even certain if i CAN go this month (or even april), things are iffy.

Part II - it's been a rough year for me, with my mother passing on, my bankruptcy, and well (let's just say) i dont have any real close friends in my city. For that matter - only one or two family members that could care about me being alive. Without going into too many details... my brother in law has asked me if i'd like a "new start in life". And, thusly, he's fairly certain he could help me out in a matter of ways. Ive never really anchored myself to sacramento. I moved to Sacramento - cause i was a kid & my folks retired & we just MOVED here. Sacramento isnt bad, but it doesnt feel like its "MY TOWN".

I'm thinking of a fresh start, a new town. A town where i can ...

awww, heck, enough typing. Folks, what do you think? Me & LV (permanent style)?

If it's something you want to do, and you don't have any strings attaching you to where you are ... why not? I've heard from several who have moved there and not regretted it, tho I'm sure somewhere there are those who have.

As long as you get the work/housing part figured out, it would at least be an interesting experience.

I agree with Al Matt. A job and somewhere to live is what you have
to plan. You know there's many positions in gaming. Just about each
hotel/casino website has a 'JOBS' listing. The RJ has a permanent
Find A Job/Find A House in the upper Right corner of their home page...
www.lvrj.com

Your experience from past jobs may be put to use in Vegas...
You can obviously rent if you can't buy, but are you ready for the
lifestyle/weather change in the desert? Your gambling habits will change,
you'll develope different interests and again........there's the desert.

Focus on a job idea first...housing is less of a problem.
Through out ideas here, get feedback.

You'll need to start thinking of what you'd put in a resume.....if nothing
else, start writing down all the things you've done and can do, places
you've worked...is training school a possibility 'dealers' or a new trade...
the University is there for part time classes...don't know if they have a
community college.
If you have a chance...at a second chance, and it feels right GO FOR IT!

In re. to a place on this board where folks can hook up on their trips...
Most boards have a 'Member Meets', 'Vegas Get Togethers' topic where
you can post your dates and organize visits...GRANT? GOOD IDEA HERE!

Moving to Vegas is probably all of our dream.
What type of work do you do?
Is there a need for it in Vegas or interested in
a complete change of careers?
I would say that Vegas probably has the most potential
of any city in the US.
Guess it would be something to definetly look into.
Not sure what the price of rent etc is in Vegas. That
would probably be a big consideration.
Hopefully you'll get lots of ideas from everyone here.

thanks you two....

Well this is very preliminary (spell?).

I know the unemployment percentage in LV is 0%.
My usualy type of work is driver / warehouse / loading dock / forklift.
I love casinos--am not sure if i'd want to be a dealer, but i know i could.

I have no problem with the climate.
If it was 110 in alabama--forget it...LV, no problem.
I have allergies -- and in the desert climate (trips to phx, vegas, etc) experienced no problems.

I dont know what else to say. But im doing my share of thinking. What i'd like to do is spend 3 or 4 days down there & drive around town, get more of a feel for the different areas of LV.... and such.

The reason that i made the comment about meeting HYPE members, is that i know two (or 3) of you are going pretty soon. And, it would be nice to shake your hands finally.

HYPE has never had a mega-meet planned.

misterKeno,

I would spend at least a week there before you make any final decisions. Talk to potential employers about availability, pay, etc.. Look for potential housing prices, etc..

Like you said Vegas seems like a great place to live and work because there are so many jobs. However, it would probably be a big change.

Another thing to think about, "You only live once!", why not give it a try?

About a meet, that would be cool, but it would probably be hard to schedule anything with a bunch of us. If you moved to Vegas you would at least get a chance to meet all us a different times when we were in town. 8) :-D

You're right about the employment situation in Vegas...it's pretty good
right now. Labor workers to Casino employment and everything else
in between, the jobs are out there.

My history has always been in Transportation. CFS Whse. work and
Clarical Freight Opperations...truckers, warehouse opperators, delivery
personel, all keep Las Vegas up and running as we know it.

All the casinos have delivery docks, small whse. workers and the folks
who supply them have even bigger opperations. Home Depot, construction
suppy companies, garden and landscaping outfits...all keep the casinos up and running.

I think you'd need at least a couple week to check out the area. You also couldn't afford a hotel for that long or eat out every night.
www.extendedstayamerica.com has relitively affordable rooms w/ kitchens and weekly rates...might be an idea.

The reason there hasn't been any HYPE Meets in the past, is because
there just aren't many folks here compared to the other boards.
There's hundreds of folks coming and going that visit some of the other message boards and it's easier to hook up with that kind of volume...
we have what?............a handful of folks who post regularly? It's not a
realolistic possibility it will happen here much.
With all the good intentions, Granny and I talked about a hook up later this month, but most of the time, scheduals just don't work out.

Matthew

What a wonderful opportunity! You can look at this as a lucky break that many people could never dream of. Change is always unsettling but usually afterwards we wonder why we felt that way.

Now I'm not saying throw caution to the wind. You have lots of good ideas that others here have made, to start making a plan from. Going there and really looking around and talking to people is the next step.
What ever you decide to do Matthew just remember you can always change your mind. To do nothing, is to go no where in life. So get busy and check out everything you can.

So do a lot of reading and talk about it. We may not know all the answers but we're good listeners (readers).

I do agree your going to need more than a couple of days to check out the job, and housing in Vegas. The town is so large and spread out I'd take at the very least a week to do it right.
I would think with your expertise in the warehousing you should find a job quite easy.

All of you .. ty very much for your concerns and feedback. You're the closest thing i have to a "real family" in some respects.

I know i'll need more than 4 days to get my feet wet & a better understanding of things...rents / jobs / etc. Ive jumped on CRAIGSLIST (that's a website..and it seems that their rents parallel my N. Calif town)..... ummm, NV has no income tax. I know that's a tiny thing but oh well.

Right now i'm sort of at ther mercy of my brother in law for funding. He's doing some razzle-dazzle real estate selloff, and i dont really know how much dough he throw my way at a time. We'll see.
