Default what casino is closing next?

I hear there are more casinos closing down other than the Stardust. My sister-in-law said she heard the Tropicana and Luxor were coming down. I can't believe that. But I was surprised to hear about the Stardust. What are they doing? Putting up more condos? Another piece of Vegas history gone. Let me know what"s going on. I'm working on booking next year's holidays already. Remember, the chase is better than the catch!

There are always casinos closing. Stardust is closed but not being demolished until early 2007.

Next to close? Unclear.

- Riviera is receiving bids to be bought, nothing firm there
- New Frontier has been "about to close" for 6 years and counting
- Tropicana was sold, new owners are talking about keeping the old towers up and building on the extra property first.
- Luxor - no changes expected. MGM has it's hands full with Project CityCenter. I'd see Excalibur coming down before that, or maybe Circus Circus (same owners)
- Imperial Palace and Harrahs - Harrahs Inc was planning on demolishing and redeveloping, but now they are getting buyout offers, so that appears to be on hold. But IP is likely the next to go.
- Aladdin - not really going away, but getting renamed/rethemed to Planet Hollywood.

So I guess my money is on IP going next, all things considered.

:-D Thanks, Al. I couldn't see more coming down. But what's with all the condos? I know the south end's building quick but so is down by the Stratosphere.Pretty soon it'll be a retirement community. LOL. Thanks again Al.

One thing about Vegas you cant say is its boring. Changes going on all the time. Changes in names, changes in owners, and just plan knock it down and build new.

it's all about condos now --
there is an area called CITY CENTER -- that, each day has 7000 workers on its jobsite

Condos are developer-crack, and here's why: you sell them before you build it, so your capital needs are way low. That means developers get into it without necessarily having big bank accounts. Fine when it works, but if sales are slow (happens) or construction costs rise, or there are delays (both happening now all over LV) the project dies b/c developer can't withstand the costs.

There are condo projects everywhere in the valley. www.vegastodayandtomorrow.com does an excellent job tracking all this stuff, even if the site is a little too rah-rah for "blow it up and make a shiny new thing!"
