Las Vegas Trip Reports

ay five was realativley uneventful except for the Wynn.

went to the Wide Shoe Store at Harmon and Paradise (the road is a mess). Nice store if you have very wife feet. saw two pairs of shoes in sale that were too wide 5E’s so didn’t.

went to Costco on Martin Luther and overspent our days spending money, cigarettes and books. After reading Void Moon (great book about Vegas), I may add Michael Connelly to my reading list so bought the latest plus a paperback.

Next stop the Palms for the $50 POV coupon. No food, Maureen not up to it, so hit the Palms shop, after Silver Strike number 10, different machine, three playlines but need two bars plus a Silver Strike to win. but you can win up to three.

Needless to say the Palms Shop is a disappointment. Do you get the feeling that if a coupon seems to good to to be true.

Buy two hats and a T-shirt and save $40, but struggle to do that.

Off to the Wynn for lunch. haven’t tried the other great buffet’s (we are comped at the Wynn cause Moe loves the casino), but cannot imagine them being much better than this one. The pasta selection is amazing and the Kobe Meatballs are to die for. Even the Kansas Ribs are better than anywhere else.

and the desserts. Wow.

Anyway, needed to go to the rest (wash) room and am attacked by the automatic toilets. I am a standing finisher so when I get up to finish the toilet flushes, BUT I AM NOT FINISHED. So what do you do. No evidence of a manual flusher so you sit down with your pants up and stand up to finish the job. Unfortunatley the toilet chose that time to overflush giving my pants a good wash.

I guess the casinos – and don’t get me wrong I have visited most of the toilets this week and have yet to hit a bad one – need the auto flush to keep them clean, but only a few have a rehit button.

After the Wynn we go back to the Strat to finish our comp. Love affair over. The special comp for newbies does not apply to the triple bonus points and we have been misformed. No comps to be had and the jacket sucks anyway.

As Jean Scott says, If you have a question just ask. If you aren’t satisfied with the answer ask someone else. not everyone in fully informed and some just guess.

The $100 loss deal is only available at the Arizona Charlie casinos but if you sign up and paly at the Strat the deal is not available.

Still play and give too much money back. Have a good run at Starwars 1, but have concluded that I prefer the bonus round in Star Wars 2. Some how free spins are always more fun than just cash.

maureen is still under the weather so we decide to go to the Hard Rock and then make it an early night.

HR is a zoo SEMA is putting on an outdoor show in the self parking lot and the place is full of truckers on expense reports. Luckily they do not play slots, just drink and fall down at lot, so the machines are realtively quiet.

give the Mutlstrike another shot. Takes back some of the money it gave me.

Anyway, its 10 pm and we are hungry sowe what Lucky’s. Service and good and the food is great. What a surprise. Maureen has an outstanding steak sandwich with Watermelon as a side. Neat idea.

time for home but see a penny Alien that needs to be played. hot two bonuses (one of which i open the hatch) and an egg which I finish wthout crashing so end up $40 ahead.

My sister wanted to get married in Vegas so in January she and her fiancée choose July 28 as their wedding date. They choose the Venetian as the location for their wedding: the ceremony would be in a chappel in the Venezia and the reception would be in a banquet hall in Postrio. My parents (from South America), a younger brother, and I would stay 1 week in Vegas, from the 24th of July till the 31st of July. I immediately began to look for a hotel room, air fares, and a car. Through this website I decided to book a strip view room at the Venezia. Anyway, in April I decided to book a backup room at the Wynn. As a plus they were cheaper than the Venezia. I would make up my mind a couple of days before departing to Vegas. In the end I choose the Wynn because it was newer and a friend just came back from Vegas and said the Wynn was the best looking hotel in Vegas. July 24th
We left for Miami International airport at 5:30AM for a 7:50AM departure. I was able to select premium seats for everyone so our flights would be very comfortable. Anyway, our flight to Vegas through Dallas went very smooth and we arrived in Vegas at around 11AM. After we got our luggage we took a Hertz shuttle to get our car. Once at Hertz it seemed they did not have our car at all: an Audi A6. They offered me an Audi A4 but declined it since it was too small. They then offered an Infinity G35, a Cadillac DTS, and a Hummer. I declined again and asked if they knew when they would get the Audi. They had no answer. As a temporary solution they would give me the Hummer for the time being and call me when they would get the A6. I then heard someone yell “we have an Audi.” Excellent! What pulled up however was a white Audi A8L. I was in shock. It was stunning and loaded with gizmos. Anyway, I drove off the lot and had no idea how to get to the Wynn or how to figure out the navigation system. After some fidgeting with the navigation system we set our destination as the Venetian since the Wynn was not in the database. We drove up the west/main entrance and used valet. I went to the lobby and waited around 15-20 minutes before I was helped and to be told there were no rooms available yet. It was no problem since we were early. We decided to have lunch at Sugar & Ice in the Wynn. After lunch I used a house phone to check room availability and I was given the OK to check in. My parents decided to go the casino since they didn’t want to wait again in the lobby. This time however I was helped immediately. I was offered an upgrade from a Resort Room to a Tower Suite room for $50. Being a sucker for upgrades I took the upgrade. Honestly, I didn’t know they had 2 beds in Tower Suite rooms (according to people on this board). I was surprised. I was actually even more surprised they had strip view rooms with 2 beds (From this board I was told that the rooms with 2 beds were golf view rooms). Anyway, the room was amazing and the view was stunning. By now I think everyone knows what the rooms at the Wynn look like so I’ll skip describing it. Anyway, I was tired so I went to bed. My brother went to the gym and my parents went shopping since my mom forgot to bring along some things for the wedding. At 8PM we had dinner at SW Steakhouse in the Wynn. Honestly, I don’t think it was worth the $$$ spent. Of course the food was good and the service excellent (although confusing and weird because of the multiple waiters), but I think you can get a better tasting and prepared steak at Ruth’s Chris for less. After dinner we drove down the strip. BTW, Tower Suite entrance has its own valet parking area which is very quiet. They also have a nice sitting area which doesn’t cool well during the day. Additionally, the walking distance to the room was also shorter. We were really glad we took the upgrade.

July 25th
We had breakfast at around 9 AM in Tableau since it was close to our room. I had mini pastries and French Toast. The mini pasties were amazing. We didn’t really like Tableau since there are barely any people in there (or maybe we ate too late). Anyway, it seemed that the USA basketball team was staying at the Wynn. Players were walking up and down the lobby and up and down the elevators. I don’t think people knew who (or how famous) they were since people were only talking to them in elevators (about shoes, height, etc). They were all nice btw. Around 11 AM my brother and I met my sister, her fiancée, and 6 other friends at the Alamo location by the airport. My parents were in the Fashion Show Mall again to finish their shopping (or maybe they were in the casino since they were now “shopping” too often). I later met my parents in the Mall since I also needed to buy some clothes. Around 7 PM we (and the new guests) went to the parents of my sister’s fiancée. They had a mini BBQ at their time share apartment. After the BBQ my mom and I went to pick up some relatives from the airport and dropped them of at Harrah’s. BTW, watch out for the speed bumps as you leave the entrance at Harrah’s. They’re really nasty.

July 26th
My sister called us around 8AM to have breakfast in Le Bouchon in the Venezia, but we were still sleeping. Anyway, she called each and every day thereafter to reschedule. We never ate at Le Bouchon. Breakfast today was Dim Sum at Cathay House in Chinatown. It was excellent and really tasty. I definitely recommend them if you want to have Dim Sum. At 2:20PM we (my brother, dad, sister, sister’s fiancée, sister’s friend, and me) were picked at the Wynn for our Papillon Grand Celebration tour on the EC130 helicopter (the newer helicopters). My mom was going to “shop” again at the Fashion Show Mall. The flight to the Grand Canyon took about 30-40 minutes. We flew low over the Hoover Dam to see it up close. The pilot made some s-turns so both sides of the helicopter had a view of the Dam. The view was so good that we decided to skip driving to the Dam. Anyway, once we landed in the canyon we had 30 minutes to look around. There was a tent where we had “lunch” which consisted of a sandwich, some cookies, a bag of chips, soda and water, and a “glass” of champagne. On the ride back we also flew over the strip from north to south. At around 8PM we, some relatives, and friends had the dinner buffet at the Aladdin. I was kind of disappointed. It was a lot better a few years ago. Anyway, after dinner, my mom, some relatives, and I went to the Bellagio (and the fountains of course) and Luxor.

July 27th
We had a late breakfast at Terrace Pointe Café in the Wynn. It has a nice view of the main pool area and the food was good (the French Toast is better at Terrace Pointe Café than at Tableau). Additionally, there are a lot more people at Terrace Pointe than at Tableau. We also went to pick up 3 tuxes at Men’s Wearhouse. Today was the rehearsal in the Venezia. This would be my first time seeing the Venezia. The complaints I read about the long walking distance from the Venetian lobby to the Venezia rooms are completely false. In fact, I would go as far as to say that the walking distance is actually shorter than walking from the Venetian lobby to the Venetian rooms. I also saw the rooms at the Venezia. I was glad I didn’t stay there. Even though the room in the Venezia was larger, it seemed more cramped because of all the huge and excess furniture. Additionally, the style the room (and hotel) was decorated in was not my taste at all: very old, classic, dark, and cold. After the rehearsal we went to Sam Woo in Chinatown. I didn’t like it. I’ve had way better Chinese food in South Florida. After dinner I picked up some more relatives from the airport and dropped them off at Aladdin.

July 28th
The day of the wedding! We had a late breakfast at Terrace Pointe Café again today. I made some errands today (Men’s Wearhouse, Target, Party Shop, etc) which took quite some time. Additionally, I called the Concierge to arrange a video camera rental since I forgot to bring mine. They did an excellent job of finding a company with only a few hours notice. Additionally, the camera would be delivered to the Concierge. The cost of the rental was $165 and the camera was a Canon GL2 (one of the best I’ve heard). Anyway, I dropped my parents and younger brother off at the Venetian an hours before the wedding and picked up some relatives (at the Aladdin and Harrah’s). I barely made it back to the Venetian in time because of the horrific traffic. BTW, I only used Koval and other back roads. I wasn’t expecting the traffic to be that bad since the other days I had no problem getting around. Anyway, the wedding ceremony was very nice (only 31 people) and took about 15 minutes. More than half of the guests cried. I’ve never seen that before. After the wedding ceremony, everyone walked to the lobby of banquet hall at Postrio for some snacks until the bride and groom arrived (they were taking pictures). After they arrived, a dinner buffet was served in the banquet hall. The buffet consisted steak, salmon, lobster, and some other stuff. Honestly, the food was just OK although a lot better (tastier) than at the mega Vegas buffets.

July 29th
Today we ate Terrace Point Café again. I also returned the tuxes and the video camera. At around 5 PM a group of us went to have dinner at the Wynn Buffet. 8 buffets were comped. I definitely liked the Wynn Buffet a lot more than the one at Aladdin. The quality of the food was just better. At around 7 PM we (the same group from the buffet) met at the Mystere theater. The show was amazing however I wanted to see more acrobatic stunts and less of the dancing and clowns. The seats I had were perfect. I could see the sweat dripping from the balancing duo (who were incredible btw). After the show the whole group had dinner again at Sam Woo.

July 30th
Today we had a late breakfast at Tableau. I of course had some mini pastries (and an omelet). There still weren’t many people in Tableau. My brother went to a pool tournament in the Venetian. My sister called him when we he still asleep and he was out the door within 15 minutes. It seems my sister and her husband met this top rated pool player and he invited them and their friends to the tournament (they are all pool fanatics). I called a casino host to see what we could do with the points my parents had (I had less than 50 points). It seemed we could get 2 days of our rooms comped, however the host told me to check with her again on the day of departure. I decided to go to the Stratosphere with a cousin and a friend for the rides at the top. I of course had a great time. The only problem was the sun and a very long line at one ride. After I returned from the Stratosphere there was a farewell dinner at Red 8 at the Wynn. The food was good but not really authentic Chinese. Additionally, it was pricey.

July 31th
Nothing much happened today. We checked out around 8:45 AM for an 11 AM departure. After checkout we went to see a casino host regarding the room comps. It now seemed that 3 nights would be comped and we would receive the casino rate for 1 night. We returned our car to Hertz but forgot to fill up the gas tank. Check-in and security was done all under 30 minutes.

I had a great time in Vegas, but I missed out on a lot and I did not spend a lot of time in the major casinos. Additionally, I did not have the buffets at the Bellagio and Paris which were on my list (luckily I had them 3 years ago). The only thing I basically did was wake up late, drive around, eat, eat some more, and relax. 1 week was a little too short. The highlights of the trip were the wedding of course, the Wynn (the service was excellent), and the Audi (very exclusive car, only saw 3 other ones in Vegas).

I’ll say upfront that I’m not as jaded as perhaps this trip report might make me out to be. We spent 3 days at the Wynn (Panoramic room) and 3 days at the Bellagio (Salone Suite). Significant other (so) was attending a fitness/personal trainer convention at the LV Convention Center by the Hilton. Flight left Milwaukee via Midwest Airlines and was supposed to be a direct flight. Ah, wait, board is flashing KC/LV. Had to make a stop in KC to pickup fuel supposedly because of the hot temps. Seemed fishy, so we arrived in LV 1.5 hours later than planned, but not a big deal. I travel quite a bit on Midwest Airlines for work and pleasure, and my experience is that 1 out of every 2 flights has some type of delay to it. The warm choc chip cookies are a nice touch baked inflight, but I’d rather get to where I am going on time. That being said, Midwest has been losing money like a sieve, and they finally reported a quarterly profit last week, so good for them.

This was my 6th trip to LV since last October, so I know my way around pretty well and know about the Wynn/Bellagio debate on this board. I’ve walked thru the Wynn a bunch of times, but this was the first time ever staying there. My impressions of Wynn. Nice hotel, reminds me of a smaller Bellagio. I like the pool at Wynn better than Bellagio, and the chairs are more comfortable at Wynn. Yes, Wynn does have the softest bed I have ever slept in. The casino seems smaller than Bellagio, and I just don’t like the feel as much as I like the feel of the Bellagio. Less traffic at Wynn than Bellagio, which I think is a good thing. Played mostly VP at Wynn, did horrible. Ate at their cafe one day, and that was nice, nothing fancy. Did see Seal and Heide Klumm (sp?) there one day eating lunch at the cafe out by the pool. I was going to ask him to sing for me, but thought better of it. Overall, I think the Wynn is a fine hotel, and I would stay there again. For me, the location is a drawback however. Everything I want to do or want to go is on the South end of the strip. As the North end of the strip continues to develop, I think Wynn will be in a better position. Oh, and my blackberry reception in the Wynn sucked. Bellagio, no problem. That is my umbilical cord to my job on a constant basis, so that was a big deal to me. High speed internet connection in room was fine with my laptop at Wynn, but very spotty and slow at Bellagio. Several times while at the Roulette table at Bellagio I was asked to put my blackberry down. I understand why, but don’t recall ever having this happen in the past. I think it probably depends on the dealer.

Stayed in Salone Suite in Bellagio in the spa tower. Well, not really…..stayed there one night but the banging from the drills putting up the towers next to the Bellagio got to my so. They starting pounding at 5:30 AM and didn’t stop until 1:00AM. It didn’t bother me. She insisted on moving. I was like, whatever, so we moved to a Salone Suite in the original tower on the 14th floor. Dumpy. Old carpeting, stains on carpeting, furniture beat up. Even housekeeping lady told me that Salone Suites in the original tower look long in the tooth. She’s right. To top it off, you could still here the banging….I told my so I told you so, nah nah nah. Overall, I still like Bellagio, you can’t beat the location, but this room has seen better days. My so asked for a discount on the room, and they did give it to her. I don’t know how much it was, it really wasn’t a big deal to me, it just goes on my charge card anyway.

If I had to pick on or the other, it would be a tough choice, Wynn or Bellagio. I still think I would give Bellagio the edge. The spa tower is very nice, and I really like the location. I think there are more working girls at the Bellgio than Wynn, and that always makes for some nice scenery as well.

We saw Love at the Mirage, and all I can say is that if you like the Beatles and artistic expression, you must see it. Excellent. I have seen all the cirque shows in vegas, including Cheval (for those that remember that traveling horsey one at the Bellagio), and I would rate them as follows:
1. Mystere
2. Love
3. Cheval
4. Zumanity
5. LeReve (yes, I know, it’s Wynn, but threw it in there)
6. O
7. KA

Again, just my opinion

As far as food, ate at Mon Ami Gabi, outside with fountains in the foreground, excellent as always. Peppercorn filet was to die for. Ate at Grand Lux, excellent, way too much food. Ate at Isla, new Mexican restaurant at TI, and would highly recommend. Ate at Maggiano’s (sp?, at Fashion Show Mall), would not go back…..blah for me. Ate at Jean Jaques Boulangerie in Paris, and although prices have gone up signficantly, it’s still a good quick lunch. Ate at Cafe Bellagio one day at the counter and it was quick and good. Long line, but said we wanted to eat at the counter, and jumped ahead of everyone else.

Gambling – sucked at the Wynn, I had a couple of wins at TI, and had a couple of really nice wins playing Roulette on the $25 table at Bellagio. All said and done, still down for the trip however. what’s new.

I think that’s about it….back in Sept for 5 days staying at the Bellagio for a work related event, but will make sure I stay in the Spa tower. I love vegas….. the food, the hotels, the girls, the scenery, the shows, everything!

This was our 12th trip to Las Vegas since the 1st time we visited back in March of 2000! We’ve stayed just about everywhere… NYNY once, HGVC @ Flamingo Twice, Mandalay Bay once, Paris once, Venetian once, Ballys/Westin once, Aladdin twice, Mirage once, and Bellagio twice.

Let me start off by saying that Bellagio has been a long time favorite of ours! We had heard mixed reviews of WYNN Las Vegas & weren’t sure what to expect… this critic loved it, another critic hated it. There were lots of opinions, but we couldn’t help thinking these “reviews” were more about personal agendas than honest feelings. So, I hope that after reading this trip report, everyone will have a more accurate idea of what to REALLY EXPECT at WYNN LAS VEGAS! Contrary to what Steve Wynn says, WYNN LAS VEGAS is NOT the TAJ MAHAL. But, after 4 nights, we believe WYNN Las Vegas IS the BEST HOTEL in LAS VEGAS!

Without further rambling, let me get into the trip report. My wife and I flew out on Tuesday and our friends flew out on Wednesday. I prefer the categorical approach to Trip Reports, and will try to separate each day into categories of interest. Hopefully this will keep the length of my report down & make things easier to find!

DAY ONE: Tuesday July 19th

FLIGHT: We boarded our non-stop Southwest Airlines flight out of Baltimore @ 7:55AM and enjoyed an On Time departure & arrival.
Landed in Las Vegas @ 9:55AM. Not much more to add here.. Southwest is Southwest: Cheap flights, friendly service, on time arrivals & departures, but no Frills! Thank goodness for our portable DVD player!

PRIVATE CAR: Walked out the baggage claim door & hopped in one of the many Private Cars that were available. With a 20% gratuity, it cost us $50. Just so everyone knows…. that is about $10 more than a year ago! Oh Well, still worth skipping the cab line to us! Arrived at WYNN around 10:30AM and were pleased to see that the side entrance is now open for Private Car drop off. No wait & No hassle. The driver was very polite & informative. He told us that he has been to WYNN several times and raved about Le Reve. He said that the vast majority of people he has talked to have only had good things to say.

ROOM: Checked-In @ 10:30AM & not only did they have a room for us, but they honored our high floor request & upgraded us to what they consider a “Premium View” room (full view of the “Lake of Dreams”)The woman who checked us in was very friendly. She informed us that our Room Key was also our Players Card & she took the time to direct us to our room using a resort map which she handed to me. Nice Touch! Read the rest of this entry »
